Do So As You May

What it Means:

To live with integrity, be yourself and love yourself and others.

Do So As You May is all about treating yourself and others with respect. Life is really fucking hard. For everyone. A lot of us are very hard on ourselves and very impatient with others, when in reality, we are all struggling and have our own problems to work through. It’s okay to be sad sometimes, it is okay to be afraid sometimes, but those feelings are temporary. As are the good and positive feelings. As soon as you accept this ebb and flow, and continue to move forward with confidence, you are Doing So As You May. Accept the good and bad in yourself and love every aspect of you. Work on improving the bad and embracing the good, that is the core of Do So As You May. Life is too short to not be doing what you want to do, so long as it doesn’t hurt other people. It is important to have patience in yourself when you’re struggling, and even more importantly, extend that patience to others as you have no idea what they are going through. Reserve judgement of them, and try to give them support coming from a place of love, to help them get through their rough patch. The cores of Do So As You May are respect and love.

And most importantly while you follow the mantra there is one caveat:

DON’T BE A DICK

How it Started:

During the summers when I was in high school, I began working at the Pittsburgh Zoo. I worked on the Special Events team with other guys around my age, all of us were in high school or college. As a bunch of guys do at that age, we did some dumb things that only we thought were funny, such as speaking in New York accents. During one of those days, I said the phrase “Do So As You May” as a way of saying “do what you want”. And it stuck, not just in the crappy New York accent. It grew into a phrase about doing what you want, finding your happiness and accepting yourself. Treating others with respect and letting them Do So As They May, reserving judgement and letting them flourish with whatever makes them happy.
